12/10/10 Notes from our meeting on the Multicultural Music Festival and World Music Workshop and class
WORLD MUSIC WORKSHOP
We discussed in depth, Ruben’s idea to have a World Music Workshop to promote the World Music class and the Multicultural Music Festival among the students.
Jane and Isabelle suggested using Fanziba to conduct an African drumming workshop. Students could also create some of their own instruments. Others can be borrowed from MSAE (shakers, gathering drum, vertical flutes). If the drumming group is going to conduct a workshop, we thought it would good if they could perform at the open mic night in January to promote the workshop.
The thinking was that we’d do it on the 2nd or 3rd Saturday afternoon of the January (January 22) or February block culminating in a performance at the following open mic night (2nd Friday of the month). This group would also be part of the performance on the final night of the festival.
We talked about funding and decided to contact student activities to see if we could get some support from them. Also, we thought about asking students to contribute $5 but this might cut down on participation.
Action Steps: Jane is going to check with Fanziba to see about having her conduct an African drumming workshop for this.
Kaeli is going to Design the poster and flyers for the workshop We decided to spend $10-$15 on a good stock photo for this poster (Goal of getting it to the printer of January 4th).
Ruben, could you contact student activities and see if we can have some funding support from them? We would probably need to pay Fanziba a small amount for conducting it.
MULTICULTURAL MUSIC FESTIVAL
We’ve decided on a possible date of Thursday April 28-Sunday May 1, 2011 for the Multicultural Music Festival. This shorter Festival would feature 4 main World Music areas: 1) African 2) Asian (including Indian) 3)Native American Indian (including South Americans) 4) Latin American
Of course, we’ll be happy to have some performances from other continents such as Australia and Europe but this narrows our focus to the student body population.
We’re hoping to draw friends and family of students who are already enrolled at MUM. And to showcase the cultural diversity of our University.
Additionally, we thought since this is a multicultural event that it would be good to have vendors (foods, crafts, music) set up in the Field House. This would serve two purposes: 1) Enriching cultural connections/exposure 2) Fund raising for the event (we could charge vendors for their booth space).
We talked about adding instrument making workshops for those more interested in wood working and visual art. Jimmy Yellowhorse might be one possible performer and presenter on Native American flute making. Rick Stanley on Celtic Harp making.
We are gathering student names for possible performers at the Music Festival.
Please feel free to create a list on the wikispace.
We talked about possible venues: 1) The Lake across B Street 2) Dalby 3) The Recreation Center 4) The Sondheim Center
Action Steps:
The next steps we need to take are to decide on the venue and organize local resources for performers, volunteers, and contact MSAE to make sure that we don’t conflict with any of their fund raising efforts that weekend.
WORLD MUSIC CLASS Discussed which room to hold class in and decided that Spayde Theater would probably be the best place. When we need to divide into small groups to create music then students could use practice rooms.
Equipment needs were addressed.
We will need: Large Screen Monitor (or projector) with a VGA or HDMI connector and the appropriate adapters as well.
Wi-fi for the use of internet resources during the class.
Also, Jane mentioned that if the class were larger than 10 people that we would need another Teaching assistant. She has someone in mind.
Isabelle suggested a class size limit of 25. Anything more would be too much to manage.
Looked at the sample syllabus that Kaeli created last Fall and modified it somewhat. Putting a larger emphasis on European music and putting it at the end of week 2 after 3 days of African music.
Talked about possible performers and guest lecturers who could come to class.
This is a partial list (feel free to add to it): Patricia Saunders - Music of the British Isles.
Olaga Hopkins – Serbian music.
Sara Nabulsi (Lebanese and might know some Middle Eastern performers)
UCLA professor who is a sidha and contact of Jane’s.
Jane Pitt, Matt Jaffey & Jonathan Worcester, Leora Rosenberg and Devorah for Jewish music.
Isabelle Matzkin, Mousumi Dey, Werner Elmker, Graciella Zogbi, Binay, Jenny Melmon, and Corey Morrow (tabla).
Asamamaw for Ethiopian music.
Kip – Kenyan music.
Fonziba – African drumming.
Peta – Marimba if she can make the trip.
We talked about a core objective.
Several main ideas surfaced:
1) Curving back onto myself, I create again and again. Why do humans feel the need to create music? Jane is going to explore this topic more.
2) Isabelle mentioned the Gandharva classification of instruments into Vata/Pitta/Kapha – Samhita.
3) On the surface the Western music values of melody, harmony, rhythm and tone color can be used to compare and contrast musical styles.
4) Unity and Diversity of all Music traditions.
Jane suggested that we meet again next Friday (12/17/10)in the Faculty dining hall at 12:30 to continue planning our events and course.
I’m sure there are things that I’ve missed so please feel free to add or correct anything on here.

Multicultural Festival
There will be a meeting with Bobby Roth on Monday evening to discuss the Festival.
World Music drumming workshop
Jane and Isabelle contacted Fonziba and Janet McDonald regarding the drumming workshop. It will be held on January 22, 2011.
Ruben and Janet said that they would announce the drumming workshop at the Songwriter's concert on Friday 12/17/10.
Fonziba and Janet are working on a poster to promote the workshop.
Ruben contacted student activities about funding but Patricia Saunders found a private donor to fund it. :o)
World Music Class
Isabelle, Jane, Patricia and Kaeli discussed briefly the main objectives of the World Music Course.
We decided that Unity and Diversity of all Music traditions is a dominant theme.
Other (new) themes that were emerged were:
1) Students will regard other cultures from the inside out. Learning different cultures through participation rather than simply observation.
2) Preservation of Musical languages.
3) Music is a bonding from the physical, emotional and mental levels all the way to the level of consciousness.
Field trips were considered including a trip to the Vedic Pandit Campus. Another idea was to contact the local tribe whose territory included the land where MUM is located and see about a possible field trip to watch them perform their traditional music. (Kaeli is going to contact Vanessa Vidal of GMDO for information on this tribal group).
Please feel free make additions or correctins to these notes. Kaeli

World Music Festival 2011 planning meeting 1-27-11
Ruben stated his goal: Showing the power of Unity and Diversity through music, performers, art and cultures. The benefit goes to Consciousness Based Education to give the people the tools to live it in their lives.
According to Ruben these are the Action Steps:
1) Someone to lead the concert (Michael Sternfeld?)
2) Focus on the way the students are going to perform through our classes. (Music Department)
3) Different activities from different cultures, art, dance, performance, food festival. (Cultural Committee)
4) Funding for implementing CBE around the World. Solicit donations.—Stage, structure, getting artists and working with Laura to implement CBE. TM, Scholarships, Siddhas.
The plan of the cultural committee is to have 1 singer and 1 dancer from each continent. Showing diversity but also performers that are known within the movement to get donations.
Ruben mentioned having Paul Horn.
Music department goals: Bring CBE musicians together, demonstrate CBE music, Symposium morning meeting for meditating musicians and guests.
AM visit to pandits
Music symposium on Sunday afternoon: Ideas for speakers: Ed Sarath – Music Consciousness, John Hagelin – Silence to Sound, Paul Jones, Paul Fauerso, Donovan, Peter Westbrook.
Gather names for Symposium and contact information.
Cultural committee goals: Show Unity and Diversity through cultures but also unifying students , MUM, CBE, DLF, the whole movement. Have a cultural festival.
Michael stated an overall goal (this is a partial rendering of his idea): Using CBE as the primary mover and foundation of showing unity and diversity through world cultures.
DLF Goals: The bigger the event, the better. Put MUM and Fairfield on the map. Big stars and visitor weekend. Need $25,000-$50,000. A visit for the symposium guests to the Vedic Pandits. Michael will try to contact Paul Horn.
